We all receive invitations to holiday mixers and gatherings and it is always a nice idea to walk into the door holding a dish of something to share with the revelers. I make it a point to take food that I am able to eat, BUT that tastes great so others can enjoy as well.
In some previous episodes we’ve touched on practicing a little non-food self-care as a means for personal support and reward but today I want to discuss why it’s a really fine line and why many of the things you feel are WORK are actually self-care.
Guaranteed to be the first dish to empty at your party or holiday gathering. These delicious hors d'oeuvres will fill you up and keep you full for hours. WIN WIN WIN!
Easy, tasty, no oven, no added sugar. Boom.
If you've been struggling with Regain consider that it's going to take more than just a bag of protein and a cute pair of leggings for the gym to get you back to goal. Your attitude is actually your greatest weapon against Regain and in this episode we talk about how to change it.
Since it is Christmas I get a little fancy pants with the menu but I do keep it within the bounds for low carb and high protein. It takes a long time to get over the urge to make every dish as high calorie as possible 'because its Christmas'. I think I have arrived at that place after twenty years post op, a horrific regain and fresh second round weight loss.
YES! Our Desserts Have Some Flour. There is a bit of Bread in the Stuffing too. Here's Why it is Going to Help You.
Many of our amazing dessert recipes include flour plus artificial sugars and baking blends like Splenda and Truvia. The reason these recipes exist is because we can not live in a vacuum after weight loss surgery.
Something about a Cherry Cheesecake screams Merry Christmas to me! I make this for our holiday dinner every year.
Want to really WOW people this Holiday Season?
Stop using Cool Whip and that whipped cream in a can.
Popovers are crisp on the outside, hollow and delicate on the inside – and not too sweet. Best served hot from the oven; don't worry if your popover centers collapse as that is typical.
An impressive and delicious Turkey for a smaller Holiday Gathering!
Just an old-fashioned glazed ham with a sweet spiciness that is perfect for your holiday party buffet table. Everyone will love this traditional ham! I like it thick sliced, each piece with a bit of glaze at the edge. The Maple Mustard sauce passed at the table kicks this main dish up at least two notches.
This is such a simple dish to take to a party or to serve at home. It takes ten minutes to put together, and when served at a party with crackers, sliced mini bell peppers, cucumber rounds, or even thinly sliced apples it is both satisfying and delicious.
It is often just my husband and I for a holiday meal, so even the smallest whole turkey is too large, plus we both prefer dark meat. A perfect solution is to roast turkey thighs for our holiday dinner. Plenty for the meal and leftovers too!
This is a more flavorful lighter version of the hot dip on many menus. Mine is heavy on the artichoke and parmesan, contains ZERO cream cheese, yet tastes fantastic. All the flavors and creaminess of the original but without the five pound weight gain!
It's not fun to arrive at a party or gathering to discover there isn't any bariatric friendly food for you to eat. It's hard enough staying away from Cape Cod Potato Chips, Frozen Deep Fried Convenience Food trays, Little Sandwiches, Party Sub Ring, Chicken Wing Platters, Sushi Roll trays OR ENTIRE TABLES OF COOKIES AND DESSERTS... but when you don't have a choice, you have effectively succeeded in sabotaging yourself.
This cake is moist and absolutely delicious – especially when you top it with some warm applesauce and whipped cream. This dessert gets my vote for top dessert to serve on your holiday table! It makes a small cake to cut into 9 squares - take this to your family gathering and watch it disappear.
These melt in your mouth!
When we were getting ready to trim our own Christmas Palm tree, I decided that we needed some warm Christmas bar cookies to nibble with a mug of warm Inspire Dutch Chocolate Cake protein fixed as hot cocoa. Sure it was 75 degrees here in Florida, but holiday spirit isn’t about the temperature.
A truly spectacular holiday or special occasion dessert that really is not that difficult if you follow the steps to create the components and then assemble. Its the worlds best 'no bake' dessert. Yep, its got some calories, but its as low sugar as a fab dessert can be.
I have a bag of Pecan Meal in my freezer procured on a trip to a Pecan Grove in Georgia last fall that feature a touch of Southern Pecan goodness. You can choose any flavor of Jam you would like, I had half a jar of Smuckers Sugar Free Strawberry! So I made Strawberry Jam Bars in my kitchen.
These cookies taste so good that I have no desire to eat anything with real sugar on our family holiday table. Food this good is a pleasure and not a punishment or compromise. I live and love this lifestyle and so will you!
I have a small 1 tablespoon 'ice cream' scoop that makes perfectly portioned cookies for this recipe. Nothing beats the wholesomeness of a homemade, four ingredient recipe.
These sugar free cookies are excellent with a mug of YUM No Sugar Added Hot Chocolate on a chilly evening with your family! These cookies are not a calorie free food but they are an excellent holiday cookie to share with friends and loved ones.
Bake these as small puffy powdered ‘sugar’ dusted rounds, or as traditional gingerbread men… either way these are a winner.
Nutty Nuggets, Crunchy, sweet, nutty, satisfying!
Another really fun craft meets cooking adventure. A couple of dollars for ingredients in a tin from the craft store to create a gift from the heart for a diabetic dad or grandma! Merry Christmas.
An excellent sugar free, bariatric friendly, holiday party nibble. Serve with Famous Chocolate Wafers or Chocolate Pizzelles or Murray Sugar Free Butter Cookies. This easy dessert nails it for your holiday office party!
These are a blast to make! I picked up holiday candy moulds at Joannes Fabrics for two dollars and could not believe how great they turned out. Really perfect and FUN. I made them, then I ate them. Yummy.
Classic buttery Christmas cookies. In my home, the holiday does not arrive with out this cookie! Truvia turns out a delicious and sugar free version for all to enjoy.
These are the Christmas Cookies that were always in a big tin on my grandmothers kitchen table. I remember baking them with my mother every year and even though she's gone, these are the holiday memories I hope you are making with someone that you love. They are also delicious, flaky and sugar free!
This version is so simple you don't even need the oven - you can leave out the liqueur and use an additional tablespoon of preserves for added moisture.
Everyone will love these. Using almond meal in place of flour keeps the carbs low and makes these cookies gluten free as well! Make a batch to take to a holiday party or cookie exchange.
The ultimate holiday main course. Super simple, tender & juicy. It's all in the roasting and allowing it to rest before cutting. Much easier than you think... get a $5 meat thermometer and fly! The Horseradish Sauce is made with Fage Greek yogurt but tastes just like sour cream.
Everyone loves dip and gets excited when they see a big bowl of it on the party table. This is a healthy recipe that only tastes wicked.
Simmer the broth to soften the fennel and shallots then lightly poach the seafood just before serving. A perfect dish with the right texture for someone who has had bariatric surgery!
Perfect for no sugar dessert lovers, these spiced pumpkin soft cookies made with the Truvía are sandwiched with no sugar cream cheese frosting. Wonderful for holiday sharing with family and friends. Make 12 whoopee pies.

This was posted one morning by Gretchen, a member of our No More Regain - BE Facebook Group. It was thoughtful and has made a great impact on many others. It may ring true for YOU!
I love Summer Zucchini and this is hands down my favorite dish!
Fast and tasty! I love Asian flavors and these little meatballs taste like dim sum dumplings or pot-stickers.
It was easy to blame weight for all that was bad in life or did not turn out as hoped. No wonder we feel the pressure as we unzip and remove the 'fat suit'.
If you love fresh tart puckery lemon, then you will love this simple sugar free lemon pudding. It is one of Ty's favorites.
I have a sweet tooth and this is one of the best tasting desserts I make. Plus you can't beat the calorie and carb count at near zero. Get out your glass bowl so you can learn 10 Minute Speed Set!
Saturday was my nephews birthday and my sister in law spent a great deal of time making her ‘Paleo Carrot Cake’ so we could *ALL* celebrate with cake. Her cake was beautiful and made with lots of love, BUT its a sugar bomb.
If you have had bariatric surgery, chewing or craving ice is not just a funny habit, it is a common sign of a serious iron deficiency.
Listen to your body.
If you think you can take gummy vitamins and casually sample shakes after you get home from Sleeve surgery... you'll have scalp showing and be dog tired faster than you can lose your first hundred pounds.
'How many pounds have you lost?'
Amazing flavor - a perfect sugar free cocktail using ingredients most restaurant bars have on hand. Cin cin!
My Grandmother was the best cook, this simple salad is one that I remember from parties she hosted.
The ten best food sources of calcium are
It was 33 degrees here in Fort Lauderdale this morning, and the entire world was procuring ingredients for soup at Whole Foods. I was no different as I picked up some fresh and perfect ingredients for classic New England chowder.
The salad makes the super moist salmon even more delicious and creamy for a perfect post op meal.
Salmon is very simple to cook, moist and easy to eat for those who have had bariatric surgery. It is also a beautiful plate for a sit down holiday meal.
There are times when everyone has had to resort to counting change from the can in the closet. Whether rich or poor, we still have to put supper on the table. These are from my budget files for times when I need to stretch too few dollars into some big meals.
THIS ONE IS ASSEMBLED ON THE FLY FROM THE FRIDGE. ANOTHER PERFECT BARIATRIC SMALL MEAL!
Here is an easy one if you are one of those post ops who cant finish a restaurant meal.
Remember that Deviled eggs can be lightened up by using Plain Greek Yogurt in place of the Mayo.
These taste like the cheesy part of a lasagna or ravioli. I like to keep it clean and simple. Delicious with simple marinara spooned over a portion in a small dish.
Sweet Pepper and Cheese Frittata
After eating our way to 300 pounds and having major surgery to help fix things, we wouldn't want to inconvenience ourselves with dieting, would we?
Ask an Italian... Calabro is by far the best brand, followed by Polly-O... Sargento is grainy.
With all due respect, you overcook chicken, rendering it dry and tough and hard to digest. Open your mind, follow a simple tip or two and you will be amazed by the difference in your very first attempt. I have this one covered!
We've been eating the WRONG foods for a lifetime, how do we suddenly know what's right?
Obviously, all carbs are not created equal. If we were all brilliantly well versed in nutrition and effortlessly made great choices, we would not have needed bariatric surgery. Drop the Mic.
Amazing flavors... tomato, parmesan, Italian herbs and even pepperoni. Tons of flavor with 100 calories per Pizza Cloud, 3 carbs and 1 gram of fat. Absolutely simple, yet flavorful perfection. PIZZA CLOUDS ROCK!
I roast my turkey breast side down, so it is very moist, plus the creamy Greek yogurt blended with a touch of mayonnaise for tang creates the right texture for a bariatric post-op. Grapes add sweetness and curry powder adds zestiness and snap!
Remember when you were a kid and you hung onto that dollar because you wanted to make sure you spent it on something good? Same thing here. You don't want to spend your valuable pouch space on bread when the tuna is the protein star.
I had a large wooden salad bowl in my office and once a week would assemble the ingredients for this salad. I love the way the cooked egg yolk blends with the dressing when it's tossed. It's super filling, tasty, good for you, easy to make on top of a desk and feeds a whole slew of people. I love this salad and so will you!
Sriracha is star ingredient in this easy sauce that really goes on anything, a turkey burger, steak salad, dipping sauce for shrimp, or sauce for salmon. Great stuff.
After bariatric surgery its not the Quantity but the Quality. I can easily eat high protein steak if it is lean and tender.
A member of our BariatricEating Support Group on Facebook asked if we could create a bariatric friendly version of an Amish broccoli carrot salad she loved that is traditionally made with a sweet tangy mayo sour cream dressing. Admin Alison Garcia took on the task and came up with a lighter yet delicious salad!
Voila, a smaller batch of goodness that is very easy and quick to make. Lightly brushing warm freshly baked doughnut holes with melted butter and rolling them in Cinnamon and Truvia keeps them soft and moist. They melt in your mouth! I even piped a few with a dab of sugar-free grape jelly. A wonderful Holiday dessert treat.
Just because we had surgery does not mean we have to forgo occasional sweets, as long as they do not have added sugar and are in line with our new way of life. These fit the bill!
Desserts are impossible to avoid - no one wants to sit without a plate while everyone eats dessert after a holiday meal... for the rest of their life.
This is a protein rich creamy egg and ricotta custard posing as a dessert. It makes a wonderful breakfast lunch supper, or TV watching family 'dessert'. I love this dish!
Is there anything better than a silky smooth dessert that you don't have to bake? No, there really isn't!
Over the years, studies and books have shown over and over that children from families who eat together do better in school, that eating whole fresh food is healthier, that eating sustainably will help to save the environment.
It is important that we have an open and honest discussion of holiday drinking so we not only know what to expect, but can handle ourselves like ladies and gentlemen and remain safe.
For many, morbid obesity is the outward symptom of something deeper; when paired with the fact that alcohol is absorbed at nearly full proof as there is little or no stomach digestion, you've got an ominous combination of circumstances.
These toasted nuts are off the chain. Since Ty’s family lives in the heart of prime pecan-growing region, I always have a big bag of pecans in the freezer. I make this recipe in a larger batch to take to a party as a gift for the hosts.
I love an occasional margarita but store bought mixer has a ton of sugar in it. Bottled sugar free margarita mix sucks - blech! I used to live in Mexico and once you have had a handmade 'real' margarita made with fresh lime, nothing else will do.
In this recipe pureed watermelon is added to the water! Once you try it, you will be excited to try these no sugar added ‘Aguas’ with strawberries and cantaloupe too.
This tastes EXACTLY like the supermarket kind and takes 2 minutes. Make sure you buy a whole nutmeg to grate into and on top of this as that is the key to the flavor. There are packets of walnut looking whole nutmeg for .99 cents, Badia brand... in the spice section. Felix Navidad.
After you are doing well with eating soft smooth purees you will progress to soft foods which differ in that they are of a consistency what can easily be mashed with a fork. While is can be frustrating to be stuck in these special texture phases, advancing too rapidly into foods that are somewhat dense and hard can cause you to vomit and even result in food getting stuck.
First Fall Applesauce... make your own!
The Fresh Market was roasting Hatch Green Chilies in front of the store this afternoon and I picked up a big container to make this amazing cheesy puff. BE. Careful. to. not. get. DOWNWIND. of roasting chilies.

A Shrimp Cocktail has meant the meal is special ever since The Sixties. This version bathes the shrimp and or crab in a creamy and slightly smoky chipotle sauce. The wow factor comes from serving them in a martini or wine glass. It's a super easy to eat dish that people really enjoy.
This one is so good, you will be famous for it. People will ask you IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR CHEESECAKE. Trust me.
All I have to say is wow! Serve this after a special occasion dinner and blow everyone's mind.
These are a sort of ‘meatloaf on a stick’ that I can cook in minutes using my grill pan. If you don’t have one, you can use a skillet or broiler. I like the bamboo skewers so no one at the table feels cheated that there isn’t a bun!
